The article, “Designing MEMME – A conceptual material and energy metabolism model for economies”, has just been published in the journal Ecological Economics.
It presents the Material and Energy Metabolism Model for Economies (MEMME), a new framework to analyze social metabolism at the country-level which allows a consistent accounting of material and exergy stocks and flows in both mass end energy units.
Applied to Portugal (1970–2022) as a case study, the paper demonstrates how MEMME can support the analysis of resource transformations, material–exergy intensity, and biophysical economic productivity.
The work contributes to advancing integrated approaches for understanding the material and energy foundations of economies and socio-metabolic transformations.
