Webinar 1 hosted Jana Holz from Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena and Dr. Anna Saave from the University of Freiburg who presented their latest research with the title:

"Extractivist valorization in industrial forestry in the Global North. Conceptual thoughts and empirical insights from Finland"

Their presentation was two-fold: First, a recently developed analytical framework for extractivist valorization in industrial forestry in the Global North was presented by Dr. Anna Saave. The proposed framework serves as a complement, systematization, and extension of the concepts of valorization and (post-fossil) extractivism. The concept of 'extractivist valorization' investigates forestry as an industry that socially and economically mediates relationships between individuals, society, and nature. Second, Jana Holz introduced the case of industrial forestry in Finland and demonstrated the application of the proposed framework to it. Their main argument is that new pathways of valuing and using forests need to be actively pursued to integrate the forest sector into the broader project of social-ecological transformations. In the current trajectory of industrial forestry in the Global North, the challenges seem to overshadow the potentials in light of a future sufficient, just, and caring forestry.
