REMASS Researchers at ISIE Socio-Economic Metabolism Conference

From 6–8 July 2026, the ISIE-SEM Conference took place at the University of Cambridge, UK, bringing together researchers from around the world to tackle major global and local challenges through the lens of material and energy flows, stocks and processes.
The conference theme was “Urgency, agency and equity: how should socio-economic metabolism respond?”

Several REMASS researchers took part and shared their latest work, highlighting how the project engages with key debates in the field and fostering exchange with an international audience.

Simon Graf spoke about “Delineating the biophysical basis of Provisioning Systems”, Magdalena Filter-Pieler presented on “Circularity of material stocks and flows in the European Union”, and André Baumgart discussed “Global expansion of mobility infrastructure”, showcasing the breadth of REMASS research at the conference. Jan Streeck gave the presentation "Towards an open and stock-flow consistent database of economy-wide material and energy systems around the world". 

Further, Stefan Giljum organised a special session focusing on "Global physical supply chain modelling" that featured two contributions from REMASS: Hanspeter Wieland presented "Assessing the circularity of nations and their international supply chains from a consumption-based footprint perspective" and Stefan Giljum talked about "Analysing firm strategies and power constellations in the global copper supply chain".

REMASS also contributed to the poster session: Siwar Ortiz presented "Extracting Value, Exporting Risk: Profit Repatriation and Brazil’s Deforestation Dynamics" and Martin Cerny "Production technology matters: How to track resource requirements in supply chains in energy transition scenarios".
