This study evaluates the feasibility and land-use impacts of replacing fossil-based plastics with bio-based alternatives from a systemic perspective on the Austrian bioeconomy.
A full transition significantly increases Austria's global embodied land consumption, leaving only a small fraction of modeled scenarios within agricultural land boundaries.
Staying within these boundaries and fostering food security requires pairing plastic demand reduction with broader systemic transformations, such as shift to more plant-based diets and agriculture, capped bioenergy demand, reduced food losses, and lower export orientation.
