The Austrian Science Fund (FWF) has recently awarded funding to the innovative research project SPECTRUM. Led by Dr. Harald Grabher at the Wegener Centre of the University of Graz, and mentored by Prof. Illona Otto,
this research aims to investigate how communities in low- and middle-income countries adapt to extreme weather events.

Based on case studies from the Philippines and Mozambique, SPECTRUM will explore tipping dynamics in social practices in the wake of climatic disruptions, as well as their influence on resource use and sustainability.

The project combines socio-metabolic research with social practice theory to generate fresh data and insights for the two cases. SPECTRUM complements REMASS research by providing perspectives on local-level responses of households and communities in settings most vulnerable to extreme weather events.
