The REMASS project team gathered at the Complexity Science Hub Vienna for a two-day workshop on "Resilience across socio-metabolic, network, and supply chain systems."
The event aimed to refine key concepts and highlight the project’s focus on the intersection of social metabolism and resilience, while also bringing together external experts to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and exchange.
Day one began with a social science approach to resilience, featuring valuable presentations from Jamila Haider (Stockholm Resilience Center) and Axel Schaffer (University of the Bundeswehr, Munich). A practitioner’s perspective was also shared by Mahmoud Abouelnaga, a representative from UNIDO, enriching the discussion.
In a dynamic world café format, four parallel groups delved deeper into the topic, promoting interactive dialogue.
The afternoon focused on resilience from a network perspective, with four international guest speakers (Shlomo Havlin, János Kertész, Simon Levin and Raissa D`Souza) exploring themes such as network vulnerability, robustness, and cascading failures. Each presentation was followed by a Q&A session and lively discussions.
On the second day, the workshop shifted to industrial ecology and supply chain resilience. Xin Sun (University of Groningen) and Ben Sprecher (TU Delft) introduced fresh perspectives on resilience in the electric vehicle supply chain and the role of industrial design in securing critical raw materials.
Group discussions and plenary reporting wrapped up the event, with key outcomes and learnings collected for the on-going project work.
